Pretty much, but I honestly don't think he has it either. I would feel really terrible if it ended up being true.

That's what they said about AIDS, but what kid actually understands the seriousness of it without having to experience it?

  • I Am Doctor Omgolapus, Bllaarrgh!
  • Unlikely, for several reasons.

Pancreatic adenocarcinomas mean age of onset is 55, and is almost unheard of at this age range. That, and the alleged one year time-line is off.

In 90% of cases, patients are diagnosed after they have a locally advanced neoplasm, or metastatis to the liver/lung. For these 90% of cases, in only 10-20% are considered surgically resectable. In these rare (lucky) cases, chemotherapy (usually using 5-flourouracil and/or gemcitabine) following pancreaticoduodenectomy gives survival lifetimes of about 40% after 2 years, and 25% after 5 years. In the 80-90% cases of advanced stage diagnosis, even with chemotherapy, survival rate after 5 years is less than 2% (mean 6 - 7 months).

As such, a one year diagnosis doesn't make sense. If it's one of the lucky (resectable) cases, a diagnosis of "about 2 years" would be expected. If it's one of the "too late" cases, a diagnosis of "about 6 months" would be expected.

Finally, people with cancer rarely choose to broadcast it to the world. It doesn't garner genuine sympathy from strangers, and it tends to disrupt existing interpersonal relationships (since the patient frequently becomes defined by the illness).
