Should we revert back to PvP? (A petition to Thalagyrt)
When the server started, I'm not lying, there were at times over 20 people on, all with something important to do and homes to make. Nobody was freely giving out stacks of diamonds or running gazillion-block-wide mobfarms. For a short while there was even PvP enabled globally, and after a few first issues were solved the town was built, people's riches amassed, and activity slowly left the server.
Why?
I believe it is mostly these simple reasons.
Lack of a destructive force to promote constant building.
Care-bears over-caring themselves.
Lack of excitement in the server.
This is why I am now taking votes on whether we should turn the server back to the way it was; Reverting to the age of the loose treaty, with a race to gather the materials for a war that would inevitably break out soon. Factions take in newbloods and ally or oppose each other in an endless cycle of ruthless politics. Perhaps a starter town with a very small amount of neutral land (Think of the discovr.us server) may exist to prevent certain issues, but something has to happen to bring back more life to the server.
Please post with your vote/outlook and anything else you would like to say.

Humans (People may get butthurt. It's a game.)
Wraith
Fast_Fire (People will get butthurt. Deal with it.)
Mentulmhat
Alviss
Naosyth (I had waaaay more fun playing PVP with 20+ people back in the day than just walking around a boring town all day.)
Nay...
Thalagyrt (well, you have to understand where i'm coming from - even if everyone that plays here wants to do xyz, if i, the person hosting the damn thing, don't have fun with xyz, then i get nothing but stress of player complaints out of it)
Maybe...
Iplop (People will get annoyed by a map wipe even if its needed...)
Sgt_Savage
Zipperdude (Likes this world and stuff to do)

Seeing all the differing opinions and viewpoints kinda jumbles up my priorities quite a bit. I really understand how Thalagyrt hosting a PvP server is probably something he doesn't want to do, but I also believe that the only long term solution is PvP in some large extent. Some people want to build in peace, and some want to ruin other's day.
So here's some of the compromises that have been proposed, just something to consider.
From Sgt_Savage: Have two main factions with their own territory, towns, and such. A PvP zone exists between them, along with walls, forts, etc... That means that each side has a 'safe' zone and a 'war' zone. Or such. He also suggested a string of admin run activities like player hunts or organized CTF matches.
From Naosyth/FURB: Just have the current 'epic' world remain as a sort of free-build using the supplies obtained from a main PvP world... Since epic isn't exactly the most resource rich world we have... This creates both physical combat in one world and a sort of building competition in the other.

Comments
1. People get butthurt.
2. People aren't playing at the same time.
3. People aren't playing at the same time.
4. The map changes too much.
Okay, 2 and 3 were the same thing. And 4 is just a random personal gripe that is non-pvp oriented.
I say go for PVP.
People will always get butthurt somehow for whatever reason. Better to just dismiss them.
For a time we went through way too many maps, too quickly. This annoyed allot of the players.
~20% of players apathetic
The current map was supposed to be a space-filler until the new map was up. Enough people liked the map to decide that the temp map was to stay in lou of the previous map.
The majority of the players thought this was great however a few (I'm in this camp) decided to simply coast this map through since a random replacement was likely.
~30% of players apathetic
A time after the map stabilized we got access to many other pre-rendered worlds concurrently. These were great, and we even got to go to the nether.
Then the Resource Island was found on SkyLands...
A number of people got ginormous amounts of supplies from there. So much supplies that there was no way to legitimately compete with those players.
~50% of players apathetic
After that happened the connected worlds were deleted/restored/new ones added many times: Mostly due to plugin issues. (the PvP zone fiasco also happened at this time)
~60-70% of players apathetic
At this point there were (are) 6-7 worlds and less than half of the original player base to fill them. Each of us is most likely on their own, personal, world. (lonely, 'eh?)
Also, we're all squatting on incredibly large stashes. We toss around huge quantities of supplies like they're gravel.
We all want something interesting to happen but no one is willing to lose their riches/buildings.
~90-100% of players apathetic
In part, this is one of the gameplay flaws inherent to SP minecraft. What do you do when you have everything on a SP world? You simply stop playing it.
I don't see an immediate solution to the problem. imo, The players want to have their cake and eat it too. People are also still a bit untrusting after the cluster fuck of world wipes. Now people will be pissed if the map is wiped even if its needed.
This one is the only real reason not to. But people forget that it's a game, its not real, and your shit can be stolen back.
Just hide the shit you really dont want stolen.
Maybe an honour based, "no digging through the enemy walls" type deal would make things gravy. (make it a bannable offense)
I say, aye.
split the server into two camps and have them go at it on certain days, building fortresses during the weekdays and going all-out on weekends(perhaps a sponge or groups of sponges that they can attempt to take). Then during the weekdays I have no prolem helping to organise special group events like a player hunt or siege games.
The all out weekends would simply be a battle to steal the other teams sponges. We'll go by the honor system to not attack the enemy base when it's not occupied.
The player hunts and siege games will take place on seperate maps with their own independant inventories(there's a plugin for that).
For player hunts, one player will head out into the map early to hide/ build defenses. The rest of the server population will then try to find the player and kill them for a prize in the main world. The fugitive player earns a bonus for the amount of time that thay evade the hunters. Ground rules will have t be set such as no lingering in caves for too long or hinding down 1 block wide pits.
for Siege games, one team will have a fixed amount of time to set up a defense and attempt to defend it from the other team as long as possible. As time passes, resources such as gunpowder or extra arrows will be made available to both teams. once the fortress is taken by killing the teams leader(elected by the team and has nothing to do with outside of siege) or destroys and replaced a sign with certain text, the game ends and the teams switch.
potential plugins that we do not already have:
Headblocks:
for identifying teams
Multiinv:
for per world inventories
Perhaps implement kits for events.
may add more when I think of it.
So for my vote, Ill be right on the border.
Japan much?
Setting up organized battles and crap will never work. People's schedules are too different, and timezones don't always cooperate, etc. I had waaaay more fun playing PVP with 20+ people back in the day than just walking around a boring town all day.
I say make 2 maps, one for PVP and one for storing items and just making pretty stuff. The main complaint people had on the old PVP map was that their resources would get stolen. This would prevent that while still maintaining the spirit of PVP. Also, people will naturally be lazy and keep some items in their PVP bases that should be fair game to steal. This means there will still be incentive to guard your base and seek out other bases.
I don't know exactly what should be done, just that something does indeed need to be done... It is boring without pvp.
Also, it is pretty easy to write cheats for MC
o_O
Well Said.
The plug-ins for PvP among other things are broken, meaning all the worlds have full PvP everywhere. Yes, you can hurt each other. Yes, the dynamic map is also busted.
There are two things you can do right now:
1. Join the game and grab your 20 stacks of TNT, using it to blow up every structure in sight because you're that type of person... Until you get Thal'd off the server for good and the more-than-daily backups loaded... Or...
2. Join the game, form alliances and partnerships with people, and prepare for the coming storm. Right now I think it is best that we continue from the time period of the treaty that ended the first great war, but now there is a chance for new factions to pop up and more players to get into the action.
WARNING: General server rules still apply, although I have heard from more than half of the admins/moderators that anything PvP related will not be punished... As long as it's not a total dick move or damaging public property, of course.
Stonewall City Paper ftw.
Server is down because of the new Update.
