How to play on an outdated server with Beta out

New version file + old minecraft.jar

That's it

Step 1. open MC and let it update
Step 2. After the update is finished close MC and replace your minecraft.jar with the 1.2.6 Alpha Minecraft.jar
Step 3. You can now join the server! xD

oh, you're probably messing with the wrong minecraft.jar

For Windows XP:
c:\Users\*yourname*\appdata\local\.minecraft\bin

For Vista/7:
c:\Users\*yourname*\appdata\roaming\.minecraft\bin

Replace the new minecraft.jar with the version v1.2.6 minecraft.jar
