Nobody uses FTP anymore. Usernames and passwords are sent unencrypted over the wire, and they require some rather strange network address translation settings if you are behind a NAT router (since it uses two different ports to communicate).
If you want to transfer files, use SFTP or SCP if you need to go over the Internet. Use CIFS or NFS if you need to go over a LAN.
